SAFE WITHIN MY SOLITUDE
(Dec ‘20 - Feb ‘21
)

CARD MEANING

Upright: introspection, withdrawal, inner guidance

Reverse: loneliness, isolation, putting up walls

WORDS

The Hermit is my first piece in the Tarot series, and seems appropriate after a year of voluntary & involuntary solitude. “SAFE WITHIN MY SOLITUDE” captures both the upright and reverse meanings of this tarot card.
As an introvert living alone somewhere in the middle of Texas, my apartment is a safe place to recharge and create. However, my safety and comfort here can become a crutch when I use my solitude as a means to escape reality and ignore problems. My desire in confronting this card is to find a way to spend time with myself without running away from the outside world.

BOTANICALS

In the traditional tarot card for The Hermit, a lone figure is shown in the mountains, holding a staff and a light source. The Hermit’s lantern represents our path forward.

Eagle fern (hermit): Confidence and shelter

Mimosa tree (hermit): Drawing within oneself for protection. The mimosa was known historically in Ghana and other parts of West Africa as an alarm system for natives attempting to escape slave traders, as the leaves furled after coming into contact with an object. To those who had fled their homes to safety, the furled leaves were a sign to stay hidden, as intruders were nearby.

Trio of fireflies (lantern): Fireflies are a natural light source, illuminating an otherwise-dark night.
